About This Site

Welcome to All Things Recreation and Sports Ministry, the blog for recreationandsportsministry.com!

Thanks for coming to the most comprehensive site on the web for information and help with all things recreation & sports ministry. This blog reflects my views, thoughts, writing and what I have learned in my 30 plus years of recreation and sports ministry as a church staff member and as a consultant on the national level. I hope the information is helpful to you.

I invite you to give your feedback and ask questions. What you share and the questions you ask will bring value to others as we interact.

I invite you to click on the resource links in the articles and blog posts – you will find them useful. One site you will not want to miss is The National Sports and Recreation Ministry Center. This is the organization that sponsors The National Sports and Recreation Ministry Conference - also known as REC LAB the largest and longest running conference on sports ministry in the country. Also, as they come on line visit those who will be helping sponsor this site – they will be proven providers who understand your needs for the services they offer. Most have exhibited at REC LAB.

Keep checking back or subscribe to the RSS feed by clicking RSS at the top of the page. We add items weekly in various categories. If you have a specific question or need information, email me at: john.garner@recreationandsportsministry.com.

Enjoy.

  1. John,

I would like permission to copy and distribute your artical that was in BAPTIST PRESS today, May 16, 2012. I am aware of the fact that many church leaders are totally unaware of the influence of Leisure/Recreational Misistries.

I have lead a Leisure/Recreational Ministry for more than twelve years. I would use your artical by sharing it with pastors and other leaders and ministry volunteers. You make many of the points I try to make when talking to new groups.

One of three things shows up in the artical, and/or your website.

    1. You are unaware of, or
    2. You may not be interested in one of the biggest sport evangelism outreaches
    in America, or
    3. You may need to find more information on this ministry.

Pennsylvania Racing Outreach, [PRO], is a volunteer ministry to NASCAR Racing fans at the POCONO Raceway in Pennsylvania. We are a part of the National Fellowship of Raceway Ministries [NFRM].

There is a sister ministry at EVERY raceway that hosts a NASCAR “Cup” race in the nation. We collectively minister to hundreds of thousdands of race fans during the year. Smaller tracks have weekly ministries as well. There are more than 1300 motor racing facilities in the USA and a Christian influence/ministry is at at least 200 of these. There is a ministry at the Nashville Speedway over in Gladeville that is a part of this group.

NASCAR has an “official” ministry called Moror Racing Outreach [MRO] that travels weekly to minister to the Drivers/Crews and Racing Community.

You can Google for websites and more information. If you would like to call or respond, I would enjoy talking with you. My home number, anytime, is 570-788-1995.

    Two things in closing:

    * If it has a motor, makes a noise, and goes fast, we want to be there to represent Jesus.

    * Racing is racing…. every thing else is just a game…..

I would appreciate your permission to use your artical.

“..running the RACE set before us…”

    Will Fields, President, PRO.

Will, thanks for the response. I am well aware of the various ministries that NASCAR has associated with it. You guys do a great job of ministering to the hundreds of thousands of attendees as well as the raceway staff and race teams.

Of course you can reprint the article. Thanks for asking!
